Everyone needs to detox now and then, not in a huge way, but a little everyday is good to keep everything functioning properly. This dish is inspired by my recent readings on Ayurveda, an ancient Indian form of medicine where food is used to treat and prevent ailments. In Ayurveda, spices play an important role in cleansing the body as does ghee- clarified butter which is believed to draw out disease. This soup is warming, healing and cleansing but makes use of the humble camote. One is supposed to get the best benefits of a sweet potato by consuming it with the skin on as there is extra fibre and potassium. Scrub them well and soak in a mixture of vinegar and water ( 1 part vinegar 4 parts water) to clean properly. Ayurveda says to consume freshly cooked food to preserve nutrients, so cook only what you can eat. Enjoy this bowl of healing soup!
- 1 tbsp ghee
- 1 tsp fennel seeds
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 2 pc cardamom pods
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 6 pieces camote, skin on and diced
- 5 cups water
In a pan, heat up the ghee.
Add the spices, except for the cinnamon and sauté for two minutes.
Add the diced camote and coat the pieces in the spice mixture.
Add 2 cups of water and boil camote till it is tender.
In a blender, puree the camote.
Put the puree back in the pot and add water until desired consistency is reached.
Before serving, mix in the cinnamon or choose to dust a little over the individual bowls.
