Feeling under the weather? Make a pitcher of our Kamote Immunitea!
The first time I ever tried this drink was around 10 years ago, when I was fighting dengue. I was working for a a company that was building a landfill to methane gas power plant and would regularly go on site visits near the landfill. I was under a lot of stress preparing for my wedding (exercising like a crazy person and not eating much) AND the launch of the power plant, so without realising it, my immune system was down. I got dengue not one, but TWO times that year. Apparently there are 4 different strains of the virus carried by different mosquitoes. And because I was tired, I caught it twice. In that particular hospital, you have to pay for the bags of blood even if you don’t use them – to be on standby just incase I needed a transfusion. To avoid that charge, the doctor said he would have a live donor on standby instead, who they would get blood from and process it, just in case I needed it. Needless to say the whole thing was scary. My mom had heard that boiling kamote tops and drinking its water would raise your platelets. At that point, we were willing to try anything, so I gulped down as much kamote top water as I could- no honey, no lemon, nothing! They would take my blood every 4 hours to monitor the progress. I remember my arms being black and blue already from so many blood draws.
The day after I started drinking the kamote tops, we saw the platelet count slowly rise. first by 2,000 at a time, and then slowly by more and more. After about 3 days, the platelet count had risen to a stable and acceptable level. I was not taking any medication, the only thing in the drip was dextrose water to keep me hydrated and then some paracetamol to combat the headaches- none of which could have helped raise the platelet count. We asked the doctor if the kamote tops water helped in raising the platelet levels and he was skeptical, saying ‘maybe, but not for sure.’ Modern medicine is not so accepting of natural cures such as this, but hopefully their minds will be open. Drinking the kamote water was a leap of faith because we had no idea if it would help or not. We couldn’t believe that it actually worked. The proof was literally black and white on the test results every few hours.
The second time I got bitten and got dengue was not as dramatic. Once my test came out positive, I took the kamote water right away. I was still admitted to the hospital for monitoring, but it was not as bad as the first time.
Before the time that I got sick, I did not know that Kamote tops had several health benefits including boosting immunity and even raising platelet counts in people who have dengue. Kamote tops have been found to have a very high content of anti oxidative compounds which protects the body from oxidative stress that is associated with many diseases including cardio vascular diseases and cancer. Drinking its water raises the body’s immune system, thereby allowing the body to heal itself and get back to the business of platelet making.
It is a good source of vitamins and minerals including calcium, magnesium, sodium, phosphorous, sulfur, iron and zinc and is a good source of protein and dietary fibre. Enjoy this tea on a daily basis to prevent sickness even before it comes! We love our organic kamote tops from Kai Farms
